I was wondering what it was about Meryl Davis's face that seemed funny or odd to me. In case you're wondering who that is, she's an Olympic ice dancer for the United States (I just learned that the other day...). Anyway, back to her face. Something about it seemed odd. Then it came to me: She has the face of an animated Disney princess. It just doesn't seem real.
Some concluding thoughts on ice dancing (other than the obvious "I can't believe NBC aired this event instead of the hockey game."):
Why do so many male ice dancers have such lame hair 'styles'?
And the ice dancing event of doing a folk dance routine just seems like a chance to portray ethnic stereotypes and to reduce a culture to satire.
I'll leave you with this...
Don't worry, it's ok...they're brother and sister!

oh heather! how i enjoy your posts!
ReplyDeleteshe DOES look like a Disney Princess. which means she has a future in Disney on Ice. good to have a back up plan. ice dancing can only take one so far, for so long. personally, i find it extremely boring and only watched the last two dancers to see if the canadians would get the gold. speaking of, the russian who danced last could be included in the 'bad hair' category.
i kind of wish i had seen the cowboys. i can't believe they are siblings. i find that a little sad. "my life is ice dancing with my brother". somehow that makes me feel slightly better about myself right now....
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing about the Disney on Ice fall-back career (or inevitable career). She also could be a character/mascot/whatever they call them at Disneyworld or Disneyland. Though, who knows -- ice dancing might be such a lucrative sport that ole Disney eyes could retire at 25 (I'm at least trying to say that with a straight face...).
I'm pretty sure the Russian team to go last was the same team that did that horrible aboriginal routine in the picture. So I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and show their ridiculous costumes AND his ridiculous hair. Same with the partner of the Disney Princess -- there's some more lame hair.
Ice dancing is indeed pretty boring and lame. And apparently there were three days of ice dancing events! That's insane. I caught a few routines during the folk dance night (when the hockey game went to commercial and I occasionally changed the channel to see what was going on in the crazy world of Ice Dancing). I think I saw parts of maybe 4 or 5 dances and that still seemed like way too many. Those folk dances can make you feel awkward -- like the aboriginal one. And then there was another routine to Hava Nagila, with corresponding costumes (fortunately (?), at the end of the dance I saw that they were from Israel and then it was less awkward. Sort of.) And then last night I saw that last couple performing (the Russian couple), but I was so bored I turned off the TV after seeing ten seconds of the routine. I didn't even care who won. Congrats to Canada!
And what's crazy is the cowboys weren't the only brother and sister pair. That Hava Nagila pair were brother and sister too. So I looked it up online and of the Olympic pairs competing in ice dancing, *four* were siblings!! I heard the commentator say about the cowboy siblings that they like to portray characters that 'lean on each other' (or some similar wording. I think 'lean on each other' just came to my mind first because they sure are leaning on each other in that picture...) but are not necessarily characters in love. I should hope not. That would be super awkward.
upon further reflection- i think you are right! the russian couple is the same as the last one that i saw skate. i didn't recognise his hair styled in such a manner. gross!!
ReplyDeleteugh. the sport is so boring. which is why i only watched like, three pairs so. and i only kept watching to see if we got the gold. *yawn*
my mom called me the other day and the first thing she said was: "i'm so glad you didn't go in to ice dancing. this is SO boring."
and i responded; "yeah i saw that it was on and i turned it off."
to think, i actually chose work over watching it!!
