Wow, That is Scathing...Pt. 2

Vanity Fair's Andrew Wagner on Joanna Newsom's new album Have One On Me (which is a 3-disc album):
Does anyone really want three discs of Joanna Newsom? Have One On Me is like listening to the Pride and Prejudice book-on-tape while driving on I-94 through Indiana and Illinois with NPR's Jonathan Schwartz riding shotgun. It's long (3 discs!), sad, depressed, flat, antiquated, boring, and runs the risk of making you nod off at the wheel and die. All this against a beige backdrop flanked by decaying industrial towns. I mean, three discs?

  1. boooo!

vanity fair needs to shove it. i love love love love this album. sad & depressed... maybe a little. flat, antiquated, and boring? wrong. i think a three disc album is incredibly ambitious, but she pulled it off beautifully. the title track kills me. if i ever have to drive through Illinois and Indiana again (which i pray to all that is sacred and holy that i do not) i'm bringing ms newsom along to take the edge off.

  2. Hear, hear!! Well said! There are so many pretty songs on this new album.

And, really, this guy just doesn't like Joanna Newsom at all. So his issue is not so much with this album, per se; it's just Joanna's music in general. He doesn't like her style, her voice, her harp-playing, and so on. The article was him discussing with a friend (that does like Joanna Newsom and defends Joanna) about how he does not get the appeal of her music. So he's not coming from an open-minded point of view when critiquing her album.
